Labels need more than an upload button. This piece compares four distributors on roster access, release approvals, statements and cost. Our pick for all-round workflow is our [record label distribution on Kinjari Label](/music-distribution-for-independent-labels) at $39/mo.

The Label plan gives labels of any size artist submissions, release approval, metadata control, royalty reporting, recoupment and unlimited team access in one account. It starts at $39 a month for 200 catalogue tracks, includes Beatport and Volumo, and pays the label 90% of royalties.

That does not make it the only worthwhile choice. Label Engine is a strong percentage-only option with mature accounting, demo and promotion tools. Symphonic is also a strong choice for labels that prefer an application-based service with hands-on support and marketing consideration. [DistroKid Ultimate](/distrokid-alternative) keeps basic multi-artist upload costs low if your accounting already lives somewhere else.

Kinjari publishes this guide, so do not take the first paragraph on trust. The useful comparison is what happens between an artist sending you a finished master and receiving an accurate statement months later.

- **Best overall for independent labels:** Kinjari Label
- **Percentage-only label model:** Label Engine
- **Application-based service with hands-on support:** Symphonic Partner
- **Low-cost multi-artist uploads:** DistroKid Ultimate

What makes music distribution suitable for a label?
---------------------------------------------------

An artist can judge a distributor by upload cost, royalty share and the stores they need. A label has more moving parts. You are collecting files from several people, checking credits, scheduling releases, tracking costs and explaining statements to a roster.

A distributor can deliver to every major streaming service and still leave most of that work in email and spreadsheets. These are the label functions worth testing.

### Roster access without sharing the owner login

Your artists may need to submit music or inspect earnings. An A&R manager may need to approve a release. An accountant needs reporting but should not be able to change metadata. Look for named users, sensible permissions and a clear owner role.

A plan that supports ten artist names is not automatically a ten-person workspace. Check what each person can see and change.

### A release approval step

Artist self-service saves time only when the label retains control. A good workflow lets an artist add audio, artwork and credits, then holds the release for the label to review. The label should be able to correct a contributor role, spelling or date before delivery.

This matters because metadata mistakes travel. A bad primary-artist credit can create the wrong profile; a changed ISRC can break continuity; a missing producer credit can turn into a difficult conversation after release day. Our [music metadata guide](https://www.kinjari.com/blog/5-metadata-mistakes-killing-your-streaming-numbers-and-costing-you-royalties) covers the common failures in more detail.

### Statements, splits and recoupment are different jobs

A [royalty split](/features/revenue-splits) says who receives a percentage. A label statement shows how that percentage was calculated across stores, territories, tracks and accounting periods. Recoupment applies agreed costs or advances before the remaining balance is payable.

Basic split payments can work for a collaborative single. Labels usually need a ledger as well: the original royalty, the artist share, any recoupable balance, adjustments and what was actually paid. If the distributor cannot produce that trail, the work has not disappeared. It has moved to your spreadsheet.

### Catalogue control and safe migration

A working label catalogue needs consistent UPCs, ISRCs, label names, contributor roles, territories and release dates. Bulk import becomes important as the catalogue grows. So does the ability to export your own data in a useful format.

When changing distributor, the safe order is to upload through the new distributor with the same identifiers and metadata, verify that the stores have linked the tracks correctly, then ask the old distributor for takedown. Follow the full [music distributor switching guide](https://www.kinjari.com/blog/switch-music-distributors) before moving a live catalogue.

### Beatport should be assessed as a label workflow

For an electronic label, “Beatport available” is only the first question. Check the inclusion, any extra fee and how the label name is handled. Kinjari Label includes [Beatport distribution](/beatport-distribution) and Volumo and lets eligible labels apply for a branded Beatport label through Kinjari. DistroKid currently charges a separate $9.99 monthly Beatport add-on. Label Engine and Symphonic also support specialist electronic distribution, but their account models differ.

Independent label distributor comparison
----------------------------------------

**Kinjari Label** is the best all-round fit for independent labels that want professional tools at an accessible base price. It starts at $39 a month for 200 catalogue tracks and pays the label 90% of royalties. The plan includes unlimited team members, artist submissions and label approval, split reporting, artist statements, advance recoupment, exports, Beatport, Volumo and 100GB storage. Banded track pricing lets the same account handle a larger catalogue, and labels can apply for a branded Beatport label through Kinjari.

**Label Engine** suits labels that want accounting, demo intake and promotion tools without a subscription. The label keeps 82.5% of distribution revenue and 80% of Content ID revenue. Its label-centred workflow covers agreements, expenses, advances, recoupment and custom artist statements, with Beatport included for approved distribution clients.

**Symphonic Partner** suits labels that want technology paired with hands-on support and marketing consideration. It uses an application and a custom royalty percentage rather than an upfront release fee. Partner accounts support unlimited primary artists and releases, configurable team permissions, detailed statements, SplitShare, automated recoupment and catalogue imports through TransferTrack.

**[DistroKid Ultimate](/distrokid-alternative)** is a lower-cost route for labels that mainly need uploads across several artists. Plans start at $89.99 a year for five artists and pay 100% of distribution royalties. You get unlimited uploads, custom label names, automatic splits, per-artist earnings views and spreadsheet exports. Beatport costs another $9.99 a month, while more detailed catalogue accounting remains a separate job.

1. Kinjari Label: best all-round workflow for independent labels
----------------------------------------------------------------

[Kinjari Label](/music-distribution-for-independent-labels) is designed around a label accepting music from artists, not an owner pretending every artist is another alias. Artists can send releases into the label account. The label reviews the audio, artwork and metadata, makes corrections where needed, then approves delivery.

The account has one owner and unlimited admins and members. That matters when an A&R manager, release coordinator and accountant all need different parts of the same catalogue. You do not pay again each time the working team grows.

On the money side, the plan handles royalty splits, artist reporting and advance recoupment. Five analytics dashboards break performance down by release, artist, track, store, territory and usage, with CSV and XLSX exports when you need to work outside the platform. The included 100GB storage keeps masters, artwork and label files beside the releases they belong to.

The base plan is $39 a month for your first 200 live catalogue tracks. Kinjari keeps 10% of royalties. Tracks 201 to 400 cost $0.15 each per month, the next 600 cost $0.10 each, and tracks beyond 1,000 cost $0.05 each. Extra imprints cost $9 a month.

For an electronic imprint, Beatport and Volumo are included rather than bolted on to the bill. The label can also apply for its own branded Beatport presence through Kinjari.

**Choose Kinjari if:** you want a professional label workflow at a low base cost, with room to add tracks, imprints and team members as the catalogue grows.

**Why it scales:** the same approval, reporting and recoupment workflow works across a larger roster, while banded track pricing and $9 additional imprints let the account expand without moving to a different platform.

2. Label Engine: percentage-only distribution with mature label tools
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Label Engine has been built around record-label work for years. Its accounting system records agreements, allocates royalties, tracks advances and expenses, monitors recoupment and produces custom artist statements. Distribution clients also gain access to its promotion and demo-management tools after their first distributed release.

The pricing is simple: there is no subscription or upfront release fee for distribution. Label Engine keeps 17.5% of distribution royalties, so the label receives 82.5%. It keeps 20% of YouTube Content ID revenue. Its current pricing and distribution terms are set out on the [Label Engine pricing page](https://label-engine.com/pricing.php).

That model is useful when cash flow is tight or revenue is uncertain. If the catalogue earns $2,000 in a year, the distribution cost is $350. The same percentage becomes more expensive as revenue grows: at $10,000, it is $1,750.

The reason to choose Label Engine is not simply to avoid a subscription. It is the combination of distribution, accounting, promo campaigns and demo intake. A dance label running regular promos and reviewing a busy demo inbox may use all of it.

**Choose Label Engine if:** you want deep label administration without a fixed monthly bill and are comfortable exchanging 17.5% of distribution revenue for it.

3. Symphonic Partner: hands-on service alongside software
---------------------------------------------------------

Symphonic Partner pairs label technology with an application-based service model. Pricing is a custom share of royalties rather than a public fixed number. It suits labels that want more human involvement around distribution, regardless of catalogue age.

The operational toolkit is strong. SymphonicMS supports unlimited primary artists and releases, configurable team permissions, detailed royalty statements, automatic payments through SplitShare and recoupment rules for advances or approved expenses. TransferTrack can pull release data from a Spotify link or UPC, which reduces the manual work in a catalogue move. Symphonic describes the current label plan and inclusions on its [Starter and Partner comparison](https://symphonic.com/join/).

Partner accounts can also receive dedicated support, DSP marketing consideration and access to wider services. That human layer is the distinction. A label that wants help coordinating releases and pitches may value it more than a self-serve dashboard.

The trade-off is certainty. You need to apply, the commercial terms depend on the deal and dedicated client management is not promised to every applicant. Ask for the proposed percentage, service scope, exit terms and catalogue-transfer process in writing before comparing it with a public subscription.

**Choose Symphonic if:** you want hands-on support or marketing consideration and are comfortable with an application and a negotiated royalty share.

4. DistroKid Ultimate: low-cost uploads with lighter label accounting
---------------------------------------------------------------------

DistroKid Ultimate starts at $89.99 a year for five artist slots, with larger tiers up to 100 artists. It includes unlimited uploads, custom label names and 100% of distribution royalties after applicable banking fees and taxes. Labels can set automatic earning splits, view earnings by artist and export the data for further work. Those label features are confirmed in [DistroKid's label account guide](https://support.distrokid.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013534354-What-Services-Does-DistroKid-Have-for-Record-Labels).

For a five-artist roster that already uses separate accounting software, that keeps the distribution bill low. The limitation is the shape of the workflow. DistroKid's own label guide focuses on artist slots, splits and downloadable earnings reports. It does not present the account as a full expense ledger with advance recoupment and label-issued artist statements.

Electronic labels should also add the real Beatport cost. DistroKid's [current Album Extras page](https://support.distrokid.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013534274-What-Are-Album-Extras) prices Beatport at $9.99 a month for unlimited eligible electronic releases across the account. That takes the five-artist plan plus Beatport to $209.87 a year before any other extras.

**Choose DistroKid if:** your roster fits the artist limit, you want low-cost unlimited uploads and you are happy to run approvals, contracts, expenses and formal statements elsewhere.

What does each option cost at label scale?
------------------------------------------

Percentages become easier to judge when you put revenue through them. This example assumes one label, no tax, 200 active tracks and five artists. Beatport is included where it is part of the compared label offer; the DistroKid figure includes its $9.99 monthly Beatport add-on.

**Kinjari Label:** at $2,000 in royalties, the annual cost is $668; at $10,000, it is $1,468. Both totals combine the $468 yearly subscription with Kinjari's 10% royalty share.

**Label Engine distribution:** there is no subscription in this calculation. Its 17.5% share costs $350 at $2,000 in royalties and $1,750 at $10,000.

**DistroKid Ultimate 5 with Beatport:** the annual cost stays at $209.87 in both examples because there is no distribution commission. That combines the $89.99 subscription with $119.88 a year for Beatport.

**Symphonic Partner:** there is no public figure to calculate. The cost depends on the royalty percentage agreed in your custom deal.

DistroKid is plainly cheapest in this narrow calculation. It also leaves the label to supply the approval, statement and recoupment system being compared. Label Engine is the least expensive full label option at $2,000 in revenue. At $10,000, Kinjari and Label Engine sit closer together.

The right question is not “Which percentage is lowest?” It is “What does the label still have to buy or do after paying it?” If a system prevents one metadata error, replaces several hours of statement work each quarter and lets artists submit without sharing the main login, the operating cost has changed even if the distribution invoice is higher.

Which distributor fits your label?
----------------------------------

- **A new label with a small catalogue and low revenue:** consider Label Engine's percentage-only model if avoiding a fixed subscription matters.
- **A label that wants professional tools at a low, predictable base cost:** Kinjari is the clearest fit when approvals, unlimited team access, statements and recoupment need to sit together.
- **An electronic label:** price Beatport into the whole account and decide whether a branded label presence matters. Kinjari includes Beatport and Volumo; Label Engine is another dance-label option.
- **A label that wants hands-on marketing and support:** consider Symphonic and compare the proposed service and percentage with the self-serve alternatives.
- **A five-artist roster with external accounting already in place:** DistroKid Ultimate may be all the distribution layer you need.

Test the workflow before moving your catalogue
----------------------------------------------

Feature pages can make every platform sound complete. Run a sample release from start to finish before committing the roster.

1. **Create two users.** Give one release access and the other reporting access. Check what each can see.
2. **Submit a release as an artist.** Confirm the label can edit metadata, return it for changes and approve delivery.
3. **Build a real royalty deal.** Include an artist percentage, a producer share and a recoupable marketing cost.
4. **Inspect the statement.** It should explain the artist balance by track, store, territory or usage without requiring your private master spreadsheet.
5. **Export the data.** Make sure the file contains the identifiers and fields your accountant or royalty process needs.
6. **Ask about the exit.** Confirm how takedowns, pending royalties, catalogue exports and collaborator access work.

A distributor that handles that test cleanly is doing label work. A distributor that only uploads the release may still be a good choice, but budget for the missing system.

Our verdict
-----------

Kinjari is our pick for independent labels at any stage that want professional roster, release and royalty tools without enterprise pricing. The $39 monthly plan covers 200 tracks, gives the whole team access, keeps release approval with the label and connects distribution to statements and recoupment. Banded track pricing supports larger catalogues, while Beatport, Volumo and 100GB of storage stay inside the same account.

Symphonic is also a strong choice for labels that value an application-based service, hands-on support and marketing consideration. That is a different operating model, not a level above Kinjari. Label Engine remains a practical percentage-only alternative, while DistroKid remains the budget upload choice.

Frequently asked questions
--------------------------

### What is the best music distribution service for a small independent label?

Kinjari Label is our pick in this comparison for submissions, approvals, team access, statements and Beatport in one account. $39/mo covers the first 200 tracks. See the full [Kinjari Label plan](/music-distribution-for-independent-labels) for roster tools and pricing.

### How is label music distribution different from artist distribution?

A label needs to manage several artists, users and agreements. That adds release approvals, metadata control, artist statements, expense tracking and recoupment to the basic job of sending music to stores.

### Can a music distributor recoup an artist advance?

Some can. Kinjari, Label Engine and Symphonic provide recoupment or expense-ledger tools in the label offers compared here. Check that the tool applies the correct deal terms and shows the remaining balance clearly on the artist's reporting.

### Which label distributors deliver to Beatport?

Kinjari Label, Label Engine, Symphonic and DistroKid all offer routes to Beatport. The price and label workflow differ: Kinjari includes it, while DistroKid currently charges $9.99 a month as an account-wide Album Extra.

### Can I switch label distributors without losing streams?

Usually, if the transfer is handled carefully. Upload the same recordings through the new distributor with matching ISRCs, UPCs and metadata. Wait for the stores to link the new delivery to the existing release, verify the stream counts and playlists, then request takedown from the old distributor.

### Do I need royalty accounting software as well as a distributor?

Not if the distributor's label plan already handles your agreements, statements, expenses and recoupment at the level your contracts require. If it only provides raw earnings exports or basic splits, you will still need a separate ledger or accounting system.

You got the music. We'll get it out there.
